"BENCE'S FARM" - HUNGARY
I first visited Bence Mate in May 2007 with two colleagues - Mike Lane and Phil Newman. In 2005, Bence had started setting up a very impressive range of bird hides in the countryside near Pusztaszer
in southern Hungary. He was one of the first people to use one-way glass in hides rather
than cam netting, and he designed the hides to allow the photographer to be on the
same level as the subjects. In May 2025, Bence invited me and Mike Lane to
visit again and see the new hides that he had constructed. The 'Theatre'
and 'Cinema' hides were very impressive with superb views of many
birds close to the hide at eye level, and one was able to take
photos at night from the Cinema hide.
